Matt took this shot in rehearsal last night for the Valentines Day Gig (before we knew the snow had started outside):
(Doesn’t it kind of look like Susie is about to spear my face with her bow?)
Speaking of perspective, I’ll always be a little bit sad that when I finally got the chance to play Masha in the Seagull (2014?), it just happened to coincide with a giddy summer romance and my being in a mostly great mood. Which is not… the vibe, exactly. I know, I know, it’s ACTing, I just kind of couldn’t make myself Russian care enough. 1
Maybe I’m just over this kind of thing, I thought, meaning Masha’s painful obsession with Constantin, the object of her affections. She just spends the whole time focused on some guy. Which, if you know my entire song catalogue, is kind of a laugh and a half. And of course I was having trouble with the role because I was, you know, totally focused on some guy!! But I was getting at something that would prove useful (actually, for the part as well as life) … obsession is not the same as love.
This was not at all what I thought I was going to write when I sat down, and I have an important nap to get to, but in case you think this ends with me slamming vodka and slurring “Love Is For Fools”, it doesn’t. For one thing, I’m doing a Dry January. For another, I think falling in love is The Best and actually an essential part of life whether it begins a human relationship or… something else.
The other day I read someone’s tarot (soon there will be a separate list for this topic!) and she was asking if she would ever, after years of teaching, return to performing as a singer. Her final card? The Lovers.
Can’t beat that.
See you out there, stay warm,
RH
i am, of course, ever so slightly Russian (1/4).
